What is Gurpurab?
Gurpurab is the celebration of the birth anniversary of the first Sikh Guru, Guru Nanak also called the Guru Nanak Jayanti or Guru Nanak Prakash Utsav. It is undoubtedly one of the biggest festivals and celebrations of the Sikhs. This is celebrated by the community, all over the world, with a lot of grandiose, prayers, pomp, and customs. Every year, it is celebrated on the tithi of Purnima of Sukhla paksha in Kartik month.
What is the significance of Gurpurab?
Since Guru Nanak Dev Ji played a tremendously important role in the formation, shaping, and building of the Sikh community and its strengthening, it is important for the community to honor and celebrate him and remember him and his contributions. Not only for the people of the Sikh community, but Gurpurab is now also celebrated by people of other communities in India, who honor Guru Nanak Ji equally, and with utmost devotion.
How is Gurpurab celebrated?
To start with, a 48-hour non-stop recital takes place of the Guru Granth Sahib which is known as the Akhand Path. Some people also organize this in their homes, decorating and organizing their space to make it more suitable and auspicious.
Celebrations and feasts take place in the Golden Temple of Amritsar, and thousands of people, irrespective of religion, come visit here every year. They gather here to offer prayers and seek blessings from the holy shrine.
Langar takes place in all Gurudwaras where it is distributed to all devotees along with the Kala Prasad, which everyone must consume as it is considered to be the Guru’s Prasad. Needless to say, all devotees visit their Gurudwaras to seek the blessings of Guru Nanak Ji.
Apart from all the festivities, an important part of this festival is cleaning, organizing, and decorating everyone’s own household, this get’s the entire family and the energy around them prepared for the festival to come!
